AIMS
The history department aims to create young historians who understand our shared stories and are curious about how they fit into them.
YEAR 7 CURRICULUM:
In Year 7, students look at England and the Medieval World. Starting with the Norman invasion of 1066, we look at the huge changes that England and the wider world underwent over the next 400 years. Our enquiries include:
- How much did England change after the Normans?
- Why did Europeans go on Crusades?
- How did the world change due to the Black Death?
- Why is Mansa Musa remembered as such a successful ruler?
YEAR 8 CURRICULUM:
In Year 8 students will study Britain and the wider world between 1500 and 1900. Topics include the Tudor monarchs, the English Civil War, the British Empire and the impact of revolutions. Our enquiries include:
- How much did religion change under the Tudors?
- How did the trade of sugar and cotton lead to the growth of the British Empire?
- How did new ideas lead to revolution in France and Haiti?
- What can we learn from Pride and Prejudice about the position of women in Georgian England?
YEAR 9 CURRICULUM:
In Year 9 students study the role of conflict in the history of the 20th Century. Students look at the causes of WWI and WWII, the Russian Revolution, the Holocaust and key events over the last 80 years. Our enquiries include:
- Was World War One inevitable?
- How should we understand the Holocaust?
- Why did the British Empire finally end?
- What were the main events of the second half of the 20th century?
GCSE CURRICULUM:
In Years 10 and 11 students use Edexcel GCSE History. There are three exams and no coursework. - Notting Hill: 1948-1970
- Anglo-Saxon and Norman England, c1060-1088
