On Saturday 2nd May 2015 a group of year 8 students and 2 members of staff travelled down to the coast town of Brixham in Devon to embark on a sailing adventure.
On arriving in Brixham girls met the ‘Skipper’ (Captain) and the rest of the crew and were shown around Leader, the vessel that they would call home for the next five days.
This trip was a fantastic opportunity for selected girls in year 8 to learn and develop important life skills such as team building, leadership, domestic skills such as cooking and cleaning, and to achieve a sense of responsibility.
The girls sailed from Brixham harbour, along the south coast to Plymouth and back.
The girls faced some challenging weather with winds up to gale force 8! All girls dealt with the challenges brilliantly and all were awarded an RYA ‘Start Yachting’ certificate demonstrating the ability to confidently steer a yacht or boat, handle sails and ropes and have an awareness of safety on board.
The girls excelled, and threw themselves into all activities. By the end of the trip a real sense of self-worth and achievement was felt by all.
Well done girls!
