AIMS

The aim of the Religious Education department is to give all students a good quality religious education which is enjoyable and enables them to develop their knowledge, understanding, and evaluative skills, as well as foster their spiritual development. Our aim is that each student’s experience of Religious Education should help them to know that they are uniquely created by God with special gifts and talents. We aim to provide students with the opportunity to deepen their faith, and come to a greater understanding of the search for meaning in their own lives, as well as a greater appreciation of meaning in the lives of others. We aim to encourage and affirm students, and to enable them to be successful and achieve high standards.

KEY STAGE 3

In Key Stage 3 our students are taught in mixed ability tutor groups and have three teaching periods of RE each week. Our curriculum is based on the Bishops’ Curriculum Directory, and we study 6 modules in each year. Students are regularly assessed at the end of each module, as well as end of year exams.

COURSE OUTLINE:

YEAR 7	Creation and Covenant, Prophecy and Promise, From Galilee to Jerusalem, From desert to Garden, To the Ends of the Earth, Dialogue and Encounter
YEAR 8	Creation, Covenant, The Mass, Easter, Introduction to Islam.
YEAR 9	Prejudice and discrimination, Relationships, Introduction to GCSE.

KEY STAGE 4

In Key Stage 4 we study the Edexcel Catholic Christianity GCSE Course, Specification A. 
Teaching groups are Form based and have five teaching periods of RE per fortnight of RE in Years 10 and 11. 
An outline of modules studied is below: 

PAPER 1	Option 1A - Catholic Christianity Beliefs and Teachings Practices Sources of Wisdom and Authority Forms of Expression and ways of life.
PAPER 2	Option 2F - Judaism Beliefs and Teachings Judaism Practices
PAPER 3	Option 3A - Catholic Christianity: Philosophy and Ethics Religious Teachings on Relationships and families in the 21st century.

ASSESSMENT:

Students are regularly assessed internally through quizzes and end of module tests, giving students the opportunity to show their knowledge and understanding, as well as develop exam skills. 

In Key Stage 4, internal assessment includes: three Pre-Public exams, one in Year 10 and two in Year 11.

At the end of Key Stage 4, the GCSE Exam comprises three written papers:

• Paper 1: Catholic Christianity (1hr45)
• Paper 2: Judaism (50min)
• Paper 3: Philosophy & Ethics (50min)

Textbooks are provided by the school for pupils to use in the classroom. There is also a revision book - please contact your RE Teacher for more information.
